Target Audience and BBFC rating

We have decided to rate our product a BBFC (British Board of Classification) rated 15 after looking at the guidelines of what our product can and cant include in this age range we thought it was best suited.The following are a few examples from researching the BBFC website of what is allowed in our film trailer.

• Drugs may be shown but the film as a whole must not encourage or misuse drugs.





• Strong threat and menace are permitted unless sadistic or sexualised.





• Dangerous behaviour (suicideor self harm) should not be dwelled on or in too much detail that could be copied





• There may be frequent use strong language





• Nudity may be allowed in a sexual content but without strong detail

Although we have chosen the BBFC rating of 15 as most appropriate due to being able to involve the above, i feel that some aspects of the trailer such as the romance aspect and the shots of the two (glamorous looking girls) getting ready and drinking to go out could appeal to a younger audience who aspire to be like their older peers. They could get hold of the film through internet downloads. Our age rating reflects the target audience as all actress's/actors included are 18 year olds, we felt that we could do a film with that particular aged cast as we can relate to the cast's attitudes and were able to work with them on a friendly basis.Within the trailer we play fast up-beat music whilst the girls are getting ready, this only appeals to a young audience which we found from audience feedback and using the commutation test has proved that people over 24 found the music annoying and repetitive.The fact that the girls are wearing short tight clothes and quite a lot of makeup will also only appeal to a youthful audience through different generation up-bringings.

Our film doesnt include any non-cauasian characters,however we hope that the youghtful narrative and cast will attract ethnic minority audiences. Many productions continue to sideline non-caucasion characters but are still sucessful such as Donkey Punch who made £144,953 in the opening weekend within the UK yet it was a low budget film with an all caucasian cast.

Although many horrors are seen as male gendered we also wanted to be able to appeal to a female audience. Therefore we included girls that we felt would attract the male audience by their clothes and personalities they would be signified as being heterosexual this would help with the male gaze theory. The 'male gaze' theory by feminist Laura Mulvey suggests that the film industry concentrates on the body of women rather than the skill of the actress and this is done for male pleasure. In "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema", Mulvey calls for a destruction of modern film structure as the only way to free women from their sexual objectification in film. In our production i feel that we have gathered in different gender interest sucessfully. The 4 blonde girls are girls that teenagers of this generation can idolise and realate too well,we have taken intertextual reference from the girls within Donkey Punch as like our casts these girls are portrayed as down too earth girls. The brown haired girl however is seen more as the final girl throughout the trailer and would drag in feminsits due to her being portrayed as strong seen as on the trailer she is shown to have survived the killings of the three other blonde girls. The film would majorityly appeal to females however we consider the film to be movie-as-date factor as teenagers are stereotypically seen as going on more dates, this would bring in a male audience aswell as the girls in the film being stereotypically seen as good looking (blonde hair,sexually availabley dressed). The main boy in the trailer may also bring in the pink pound aspect as he pushes the girl away and could be seen as displaying signs of homosexuality.

In terms of class, we have decided that the socio-economic groupings that would best suit our film is C1C2DE; this is due to the idea that it is a conventional slasher and involves lower middle class characters.We recognise that the cast have regional Northern accents, however we are hoping to tap into a UK wide audience by the narrative but understand that this may affect foreign sales. However, such films as Full Monty which was filmed in South Yorkshire have been successful; with just over £2.5 million pounds film budget it made just under £2 million in its opening weekend, even with regional accents.Similarly budgeted films such as Son Of Rambow which was based in the South of England highlights advantages of regional films as it had an estimated film budget of £4,000,000. The setting of the bar scene could be classed as a countertype as it's a middle class bar and maybe goes against what people may stereotypically class teenagers previously seen to be drinking voldka too go into, therefore could drag in the C1's of the audience.

We would expect the audience that watch our film too watch films such as adulthood/kidulthood as it has similar cast age but in a slightly lower class. Donkey punch is also related due to the genre and the regional yorkshire cast. For our poster we plan too include a picture of most of the cast members, this is similar too the Donkey Punch and poster and with this idea hope too draw in their audience by linking the posters. If we were thinking of a distributor of our film it would be a long the lines of a smaller scale company such as warp x compared too working title as they have distributed This is England which has a small budget and regional following of yorkshire similarly to ours and i would hope to receive funding from film 4 and the UK film council as Donkey Punch did in fact.
